Gum Disease

Gum disease describes a number of dental problems that affect the gums. When discovered and treated early with general dentistry, gum disease is easily reversed. For less severe forms of gum disease, such as gingivitis, improved brushing and flossing techniques are often enough to treat the condition. If gum disease is not treated, the condition will progress and lead to more severe forms.
Periodontitis, which is the name for a more severe kind of gum disease, can cause serious oral health problems. Unlike gingivitis, periodontitis can spread below the gums. If periodontitis is not treated quickly enough, the infection can take root in the soft tissues and the bones that act as an anchor for the teeth. Periodontitis is also linked to the rest of the body as it can cause heart disease and diabetes as well.

SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES OF GUM DISEASE

The most common cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. Even if you brush and floss your teeth every day, using ineffective techniques can lead to gum disease. Your diet can also impact your likelihood of suffering from gum disease. Additionally, symptoms of gum disease are not always obvious. Your gums may look and feel completely normal to you, but your dentist will be able to tell if you have gum disease.

As gum disease symptoms progress, there are several things you will notice. If you brush and floss regularly and experience bleeding gums, it may be a sign of gum disease. Gums that are swollen, discolored or painful should be examined right away. Treatment for gum disease works most effectively when the condition is detected early.
